Why fire engineers in Saudi Arabia are taking the CFPS
Fire protection in the Kingdom is built on the Saudi Fire Protection Code (SBC 801), part of the 2024 Saudi Building Code set. It covers fire safety design, building equipment, hazardous materials, emergency plans and inspection. Enforcement and fire safety rules sit with the General Directorate of Civil Defense, which reports to the Ministry of Interior.
The CFPS does not replace SBC 801 or any Civil Defense approval. What it gives you is the wide base of knowledge behind every code: fire science, detection and alarm, water-based and special suppression, water supplies, life safety and fire risk. That base is tested in one exam, from one book: the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook.
Demand for that knowledge is high. The Public Investment Fund lists giga-projects such as NEOM, Qiddiya, Red Sea Global, ROSHN and Diriyah. Each brings hotels, stadiums, homes, tunnels and venues, and each needs fire engineers who can read a code, check a design and talk to the authority with confidence.

CFPS and your Saudi Council of Engineers registration
Engineers who practise in the Kingdom must be registered with the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE). SCE grades (Associate, Professional, Consultant Engineer) depend on your degree and years of certified experience.
The CFPS is different. It is a voluntary NFPA credential that shows fire protection knowledge, and it sits on top of your SCE registration, not instead of it. Many engineers use it to:
- Stand out in a crowded market: a fire-specific credential on a CV where most applicants list only their degree.
- Move from one system to the whole picture: for example, from fire alarm installation to full fire and life safety reviews.
- Prepare for senior roles: design review, consultancy and authority liaison need broad knowledge across systems.

How to take the CFPS exam from Saudi Arabia
The CFPS is awarded by NFPA. The exam is taken in person at a test centre run by Prometric. Here is the path from the Kingdom:
- Check eligibility. NFPA accepts a bachelor's degree in a related field + 2 years of fire protection experience, an associate degree + 4 years, or a high school diploma + 6 years. Confirm the current rules in the CFPS Candidate Handbook.
- Order the handbook early. The exam is open book, with an original printed NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition. Delivery to Saudi Arabia can take weeks, so order before you start studying. See how to get the 21st Edition.
- Apply to NFPA. The fee is USD 499 and includes your first attempt.
- Book your seat with Prometric. Prometric has a professional testing centre in Riyadh. When you schedule on the Prometric NFPA page, the site shows which centres have CFPS seats and dates near you.
- Sit the exam. 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours. If you do not pass, you can retake up to 2 times a year at USD 249 each.

A 10-week study plan for the Saudi work week
Most engineers in the Kingdom work Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday off. This plan uses that rhythm: short sessions on work days, longer practice at the weekend.
