What Is the Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition?
The NFPA Fire Protection Handbook is the most complete reference in fire protection engineering. It covers fire science, hazards, building design, detection and alarm, suppression systems, life safety and fire safety management, all in one place.
NFPA published the 21st Edition in early 2023. It was the first new edition in 15 years, replacing the 20th Edition from 2008. Here is what it includes:
- Two volumes, with 210 revised chapters grouped into 21 sections
- 14 new chapters on modern hazards, including energy storage systems, photovoltaic systems, the wildland-urban interface, smart infrastructure, modular construction, and active shooter/hostile events
- Input from more than 200 industry specialists and NFPA experts
If you work in fire protection, this is the book you will keep coming back to throughout your career, not only for the exam.
Why the 21st Edition Matters for the CFPS Exam
The Fire Protection Handbook is the body of knowledge for the NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) exam. On 19 June 2024, NFPA updated the CFPS exam to align with the 21st Edition.
This means one simple thing: if you are studying from the 20th Edition, you are studying from the wrong book. Chapter numbers, content and topics have changed, and the new chapters are part of the exam. Make sure the copy you use is the 21st Edition: two volumes, published 2023.

Option 1: Buy the Original Copy from NFPA
The safest route is to buy the book directly from NFPA, the publisher.
- Go to the official NFPA store: NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition
- If you are an NFPA member, check the member price before you order
- If you live in the Gulf or the wider Middle East, order early. International shipping can take time, and you don't want to lose study weeks waiting for a delivery
Buying the original gives you the complete, correct edition and a reference you will use for years.
Option 2: Borrow or Rent a Copy Through Your Network
The book is a serious investment, so many engineers start by borrowing or renting one. Your network is your best resource here:
- Colleagues who passed the CFPS exam. Many keep their copy and are happy to lend or rent it.
- Your company's technical library. Consultancies, contractors, insurers and authorities often keep a set.
- Engineering communities and groups. Ask in professional WhatsApp, Telegram and LinkedIn groups.
Before you borrow or rent, check three things: that it is the 21st Edition, that both volumes are included and in good condition, and that you have agreed the rental period clearly.

How do I know if a copy is the 21st Edition?
