How to take the CFPS exam from the UAE
The CFPS is awarded by NFPA. The exam is computer-based and taken at a Prometric test centre, not online at home. Here are the steps:
- Check your eligibility. NFPA accepts a bachelor's degree in a related field + 2 years of fire protection experience, an associate degree + 4 years, or a high school diploma + 6 years.
- Get the handbook. The exam is open book, using only an original printed copy of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition. Order it early, because shipping to the Gulf can take weeks. See how to get the 21st Edition.
- Apply to NFPA. The application fee is USD 499 and includes your first attempt. Check current rules in NFPA's CFPS Candidate Handbook.
- Book a test centre. After approval, schedule your seat with Prometric and choose a centre near you.
- Sit the exam. 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours. If you do not pass, you can retake up to 2 times a year at USD 249 each.

A study plan that fits a UAE work week
Most working engineers need 8 to 12 weeks of steady study, at about 6 to 8 hours a week. Here is a simple way to fit that around a typical UAE schedule:
