These are the figures every CFPS candidate needs before applying. All amounts are in US dollars, the currency NFPA uses.

What the USD 499 CFPS exam fee includes

The USD 499 is one payment to NFPA when you apply. It covers:

• The review of your application. NFPA checks your education and fire protection experience against one of the three eligibility pathways.
• Your eligibility number. Once approved, NFPA emails you a number to book the exam with Prometric.
• Your first exam attempt. A 3-hour, 100-question, open-book exam at a Prometric centre.
• Your result. A pass or fail result. If you fail, you get a report showing your weak topic areas.

CFPS exam retake fee and limits

If you do not pass, you do not start again from zero. You pay a retake fee of USD 249 for each new attempt, and you can retake the exam up to 2 times a year.

• Read your score report first. It shows which topic areas were weak. Build your next study plan around them.
• Do not rush the retake. A retake booked too soon often ends with the same result and another USD 249.
• Check the waiting rules. The Candidate Handbook sets the current rules on when and how to apply for a retake.

Total CFPS exam cost: 3 scenarios

Here is what the exam fees add up to, with and without a preparation course. Handbook and travel costs are not included because they depend on where you live.

One retake costs USD 249, which is most of the price of a full preparation course. Two retakes cost more than the course. Preparing well once is the cheaper path.

Rescheduling or cancelling your CFPS exam

You book your exam date with Prometric, so a change of date also goes through Prometric. The deadlines and any fees for rescheduling, cancelling or missing the exam are set in the current Candidate Handbook and in your Prometric confirmation email. Read both on the day you book.

• Book a realistic date. Choose a date after you finish at least two full timed mock exams, not a date that "forces" you to study.
• Change early. If work or travel gets in the way, change the date as early as you can. Late changes and no-shows are where candidates lose money.
• Keep your eligibility window in mind. Your eligibility number is valid for a set period. Check it in the Candidate Handbook so you do not lose your fee.
• Use the official page. Manage your booking on Prometric's NFPA certification page.

How to pay the fee and book the exam

1. Check your eligibility pathway. Match your degree and years of fire protection experience to NFPA's three pathways.
2. Apply and pay USD 499 online. Sign in to your NFPA.org profile, complete the CFPS application and pay the fee.
3. Wait for your eligibility number. NFPA emails it with the scheduling instructions.
4. Book with Prometric. Choose your country, test centre and date. Engineers in Saudi Arabia can book the Riyadh centre, and engineers in Qatar the Doha centre.
5. Save your confirmation. It holds your date, centre and the rules for changes.

Other costs to budget for

• The handbook. You must bring an original printed copy of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition (2 volumes). Photocopies, PDFs and tablets are not allowed. Order it early, because shipping to the Middle East can take weeks. See what changed in the 21st Edition.
• Travel and time off. The exam is in person, so plan the trip to your nearest Prometric centre and a day off work.

• Recertification. Your CFPS is valid for 3 years. Keeping it needs continuing professional development points, so plan for training during each cycle.

How to avoid paying for a retake

The exam gives you about 1 minute 48 seconds a question. Engineers who pass first time usually do four things:

1. Learn the handbook's layout before the content: the 21 sections, the index and where the tables are.
2. Study by priority, starting with the most-tested sections.
3. Build a keyword map that links exam terms to chapters and pages.
4. Sit full timed mocks with the printed handbook, then fix the weak areas.
