Short answer: NFPA published the Fire Protection Handbook, 21st edition, in early 2023, 15 years after the 20th edition (2008). It has 2 volumes, 21 sections, 210 revised chapters and 14 new chapters. The CFPS exam is now based on the 21st edition, so study from the 21st edition and bring it to the exam.
By Mohammad Alhamad, CFPS. This guide explains what changed between the two editions, what it means for the CFPS exam, and how to adjust your study plan. If you still need the book, read how to get the Fire Protection Handbook, 21st edition.

Can you still study from the 20th edition?
No. The exam questions are written to the 21st edition, and the 21st edition is the reference NFPA lists for the exam. If you study from the 20th edition, three things go wrong:
- Wrong locations. Sections and chapters were reorganised, so your notes and page tabs point to the wrong places.
- Missing topics. The 14 new chapters are not in the 20th edition at all.
- Old content. The other chapters were revised, so older answers and explanations can be out of date.
Be careful with old question banks and summary notes too. Many were written for the 20th edition and quote its chapter numbers. Check that every practice question you use refers to the 21st edition.
How to update your study plan
- Get the right book. Two volumes, published 2023. Buy it from NFPA's official Fire Protection Handbook page or an authorised distributor.
- Learn the new map. Spend your first study hours on the 21 sections and their order. Fast navigation is the main skill in an open-book exam.
- Read the 14 new chapters once. You do not need to memorise them, but you must know where they are and what they cover.
- Re-tab the book. Tab the sections and the chapters you use most, using permanent tabs (see the rules below).
- Practise against the clock. 100 questions in 3 hours is about 108 seconds a question. Use the free CFPS exam simulator and our free CFPS exam questions to build speed.
Exam-room rules for your handbook
NFPA allows you to tab the Fire Protection Handbook before the exam with permanent adhesive tabs, similar to the tabs supplied with the book. Sticky notes, flags, other easily movable tabs and paper clips are not permitted. Plan your tabbing early so you do not lose time on exam day.

Why the 21st edition matters beyond the exam
The new chapters reflect real projects that fire engineers now see every week. Battery energy storage rooms, rooftop solar arrays, smart building systems and modular buildings are now common in the Gulf, Europe and Asia. The 20th edition, written in 2008, says little or nothing about them.
So the 21st edition is not only an exam book. It is a practical reference when you review a design, write a fire strategy or answer a question from a client. Many engineers keep both volumes on their desk long after they pass the CFPS exam.
Checklist before exam day
- Your book is the 21st edition: two volumes, published 2023.
- Both volumes are complete, with no loose pages or missing sections.
- All tabs are permanent adhesive tabs; no sticky notes, flags or paper clips.
- You can find any of the 21 sections in under 15 seconds.
- You have finished at least one full 100-question practice exam in 3 hours.

FAQ
When was the Fire Protection Handbook 21st edition published?
NFPA released the 21st edition in early 2023. The 20th edition was published in 2008, so it was the first new edition in 15 years.
